What happens when students step into the role of superintendent for a day?
At Duncan Public Schools, four students had the opportunity to find out through Dr. Channa Byerly’s inaugural Day in the Life of a Student and Superintendent program.
After receiving more than 150 applications, the district selected students from Duncan High School, Duncan Middle School, Mark Twain Elementary, and Plato Elementary to experience leadership from a whole new perspective. Students shadowed Dr. Byerly as she navigated her day, while she joined them in their classrooms and activities.
The experience gave students an inside look at the responsibility, collaboration, decision-making, and dedication involved in leading a school district. It also reminded Dr. Byerly of the incredible effort, resilience, and heart our students bring to school each day.
Their reflections offer a meaningful look at leadership, learning, and what it means to stay connected to students.

Duncan Public Schools is mourning the loss of Teresa Benson, a cherished member of our district for 25 years.
Teresa served as an office clerk at Duncan High School, where her warmth, humor, and unforgettable personality made a lasting impression on generations of students, staff, and families. She also spent many years working the ticket booth at Duncan athletic events, becoming a familiar and welcoming face on game nights.
Teresa had a special way of making people feel cared for, whether she was greeting someone at the front office, welcoming fans at the gate, or sharing her famous chicken spaghetti, which many still rave about.
We are grateful for the joy, kindness, and dedication Teresa gave to Duncan Public Schools. Her absence will be deeply felt, but the memories she created and the impact she made will remain a part of our district for years to come.
Our heartfelt condolences are with Teresa’s family, friends, and all who loved her. She will be deeply missed.

Our Duncan High School Aviation students are taking learning to new heights! ✈️
With guidance from Coach Beard, these sophomores designed and built model airplanes from cardboard, then labeled each part as they learned about aircraft structure and flight.
The Aviation program at DHS is truly unique, offering students hands-on experiences and access to a flight simulator as they progress through the program. We are incredibly proud of this program and the young pilots that have come from it!

🎉 Freshman Focus Day: LIVE RED ✏️
Our second annual Freshman Focus Day has officially wrapped up, and we could not be more excited to welcome the Class of 2030 into our halls!
Students spent the day with our incredible student leaders learning school rules, pep rally etiquette, clubs and organizations, social media, our alma mater, creed, core values, what it means to LIVE RED, team building, and so much more.
They finished the day by leading the very first pep rally of the year, and they did a great job.
We also want to recognize the staff and student leaders who planned, coordinated, and fully executed this special day. We love the opportunity for our students to take the lead, and they truly never disappoint.
We are Duncan proud!
Every child. Every day.
