The safety of our students is our top priority at Duncan Public Schools.
Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, clear backpacks will be required for all PK-12 students.
This policy is part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment for every student. Clear backpacks allow us to take proactive steps to ensure our schools remain secure while still allowing students to carry the items they need each day.
Students can carry the following in their backpacks:
A lunchbox and a pouch (pouches can be no larger than 5.5 x 8.5 inches) to hold personal items such as cell phones, money, and personal hygiene products.
Backpack Requirements:
Backpacks must have clear, see-through front, sides, back and bottom.
Mesh backpacks are not permitted
Colored transparent backpacks are not allowed
Backpacks may have colored straps
District-issued Chromebook cases are permitted
Organizer Requirements:
Mesh organizers are permitted in the backpack as long as staff are able to clearly see through the bag
Front pocket mesh organizers are allowed
Small clutch bags inside the clear backpack that must be 5.5 inches x 8.5 inches or smaller are allowed
Lunch Boxes:
Non-clear lunch boxes are permitted
Must be carried inside the clear backpack
Drawstring bags and sling bags are not permitted for lunches
Bags and Instruments:
Athletic/gym bags and instrument cases are not clear but must be stored as soon as the student arrives at school
Must be placed in lockers or secured in classrooms or athletic locker rooms as designated by school staff

The story called “Into the Lifeboat from a Titanic Survivor” in HMH Unit 5 sparked a discovery mission.
6th grade students received a ticket and boarding pass with the name of an actual passenger that was aboard the Titanic. The students researched the maiden voyage, the passenger list and even the menu options on the ship.
The students produced many creative writings such as, “The sunset covered the horror of that night. My heart is as hollow as an empty bottle. My family, the ones I spent my whole life with, are gone in an instant, and I feel nothing. I’ve spent so long loving, that now when they’re gone, I can’t seem to feel anything.”
By: An Vuong 6th grade Honors ELA
At the end of the unit, the list of survivors was revealed to all of the students!

This school year, Duncan Public Schools 5th graders had the opportunity to explore careers through hands-on experiences designed and led by our Pathways to Future Careers internship students alongside local industry professionals.
Students rotated through career clusters representing industries that help make Stephens County strong, including:
🌾 Agriculture & Animal Science
🏥 Healthcare
⚡ Energy
🏭 Manufacturing
🛍️ Business & Retail
🛠️ Skilled Trades & Construction
Throughout the day, 5th graders explored activities, asked questions, connected what they are learning in school to real careers, and discovered that there are many pathways to success. They learned that some careers require college, some require certifications or training, and all require curiosity, effort, and continued learning.
One of the most meaningful parts of the day was watching our high school internship students step into leadership roles. They spent weeks researching careers, creating displays, designing activities, planning logistics, and learning how to teach younger students. Their work gave them the opportunity to strengthen communication, professionalism, organization, and career readiness skills while making an impact on future students.
Thank you to our local business and industry partners for investing in our students and helping create experiences that connect learning to life beyond the classroom.
We’re proud of what our students created and excited to continue building opportunities that help students explore their futures early.

The Hunger Games HMH novel study in the seventh-grade Honors ELA turned into a Character Autopsy! It was an engaging, creative, and analytical activity that helped students dissect character traits, motivations, and development. Students analyzed characters like Katniss or Peeta by evaluating their actions, internal desires, and relationships on a life size poster.

This is a national recognition only given to a select group of schools across the United States for their commitment to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs.
